Canelo Alvarez says it’s personal. According to Gennadiy Golovkin, it’s just another day in the office.
The two rivals will collide on September 17th, in a trilogy fight, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
They last met in 2018, with Canelo winning a close twelve round majority decision. The first bout, which took place a year earlier, ended in a controversial twelve round split draw.
Their prior encounters took place at middleweight. For the third meeting, Golovkin will head up to 168-pounds to challenge Canelo for his undisputed super middleweight crown.
“A trilogy is something big, historical. These days it is very difficult to see a rematch between fighters, because it is simply not interesting. When you have this trilogy, it means that people demand it, that you are at the level of legendary boxers and you are part of history. You feel proud, happy. It means a lot,“ Golovkin told George Ebro.
Golovkin was trained for the first two bouts by Abel Sanchez. In the upcoming fight, Golovkin will have Jonathon Banks in his corner.
“It is impossible to compare Abel Sanchez with Jonathon Banks. They both have different approaches to the training process and I can say that I am very happy with Jonathon Banks. I am happy with this opportunity to work with him,” Golovkin said.
The two boxers took part in very tense press conference to hype up their fight.
During those media events, Canelo took several verbal jabs at Golovkin. He stated numerous times that Golovkin was “two-faced.”
“When someone is unable to see reality, that is his problem, it says a lot about him. His behavior at the press conference shows how insecure he is, how he still lives in illusions about the situation, the stories. He drew his own conclusions based on the first press conference. His behavior was different in the second. He analyzed that he looked ridiculous [in the first one]. For a fighter of this caliber, someone who wants to be great, shows that he still needs to grow, he needs to learn a lot. He is far from being the best,“ Golovkin said.
