How to Avoid Distraction on Your Next Vacation

Life can get crazy, and right now, you probably need a vacation more than ever! Unfortunately, with modern technology, the pressures of your day-to-day life have a way of following you everywhere you go. It is getting harder and harder to truly get away from it all. Thankfully, you can still fully disconnect–you might just have to get a little creative!

Resist the Temptation to Check Your Emails

We’ve all been there. The kids are asleep or you’ve popped a movie into the hotel DVD player and you figure, why not catch up on a few emails? The problem with doing this is that your vacation never really feels like a true vacation. Bringing work along on vacation causes you to constantly shift your focus, dividing your attention and keeping you from being fully present on your trip or at work. Decide now that your vacation is going to be just that–a true break from the stresses of daily life. If you are worried about what clients and coworkers will think when you don’t respond to their emails, set up your mailbox to send an automated reply informing them that you are out of the office.

Go on an Adventure

If you aren’t sure whether you can unplug for a week, but you really want to, consider vacationing somewhere so remote that the internet isn’t even an option because there is no service. Or, go someplace where all you can bring is what you can carry on your back! Think river excursions or backpacking trips. Colorado has many great outdoor destinations for people looking for an adventure.

Silence Your Phone

Separating from normal life is nearly impossible when you literally carry it with you in your pocket everywhere you go. Of course, we’re talking about your phone. Luckily, most phones these days come equipped with a focus feature. Simply select the “personal” feature and people who try to contact you will see that you have silenced your phone for some personal time. If you want your family to still be able to get a hold of you, make sure to change your settings so that their numbers will bypass your focus setting.

Your vacation can only be truly restorative if you can fully disconnect from the stresses and pressures of your day-to-day life. As hard as that is, try to remember that in a time not so long ago, people on vacation really did leave everything behind and the world didn’t fall apart! You work so hard! You definitely deserve a break.
