How to Prevent a Wet Winter From Damaging Your Home

Every winter you need to think about how to best prepare your home for the cold. If you’re expecting a wet winter, you need to especially be mindful of how excess water can cause damage. Taking action now can save you a lot of money later.

Fix Leaks

Whether it rains or snows, a wet winter can lead to water leaking into your home. In many cases, leaks aren’t noticed right away and this allows water to continue to enter your home and spread. The result is water damage that can negatively impact the structure of your home and even lead to mold and mildew.

To prevent this, you need to fix all leaks before winter. You can identify leaks by checking your water meter and monthly water usage to see if there are any increases or if you’re using more than you think. You can also check common places for leaks such as under sinks, near windows, or in your attic. Having your home inspected is another way to identify leaks.

Keep Things Covered

On the exterior of your home, you want to make sure you have everything properly protected. If you have a deck, for example, you want to protect any outdoor furniture and the deck itself. A covering for your deck will prevent water and sun damage. You can also get coverings to go over your furniture, a grill, and anything else you have outside.

While keeping your home protected is a priority, you can also protect other assets on your property. For example, if you park a car outside you should get a cover for it so the weather doesn’t cause any damage.

Check and Reinforce Your Foundation

Water can enter your home through many points. However, the foundation is something that you need to give special care to. If your foundation is damaged by water it can cause problems for the entire house. Before the wet winter weather sets in, take some time to inspect your foundation. Look out for cracks, chips, or even changes in the structure of your home. These changes include warped walls or even misaligned doors and windows. If you see problems, have them fixed immediately. Reinforcing your foundation strengthens it and prevents water damage.

Water damage is slow-spreading and usually isn’t noticed until it’s too late. To save yourself from having to pay for extensive repairs, take some time to prepare your home. Keeping out the moisture can protect your home all winter long.
