Is Social Media Making the World a Better Place?

Updated: Jun 18, 2021

Some people claim that social media leads to bullying, negative interactions and various other problems for society. While this is true, that doesn’t mean social media is only a bad thing. It does present benefits to make it worth using and sharing with others. Please keep this in mind as you look at these different points and consider how social media can make the world a better place.

Acts as a Communication Network

Serving as a place to communicate with others stands out as the biggest advantage that social media gives to the world. After all, when you think of life before the internet, it's amazing to think that people can easily communicate from different areas of the world with social media. This allows people to build and establish relationships. It allows people to discuss different topics, which spreads more knowledge and understanding. This also allows people to keep relationships strong, healthy and continuing despite geographical distance. When this happens, it helps to build the world into a better place.

Highlights Social Issues

People can easily discuss different social issues on social media. People can create a conversation about wrongs and ills occurring throughout the world in an attempt to make things right. This can include shining a spotlight on missteps that people in authority make. As we are legally able to take photos of cops, as well as videos, it means they must be held accountable. Social media provides a free platform that's accessible to anyone who has access to a computer or smartphone and an internet connection. This platform can give power to voices that people normally wouldn’t hear, which can spark discussion that wouldn’t happen otherwise.

At the same time, social media platforms are also starting to take more responsibility for the content they host. Removing harmful or illegal content is a new thing for some platforms, but the benefits are slowly becoming clear.

On top of learning about social issues, people can also help those who need assistance via social media. Nonprofit organizations can talk about charities on social media to spread the word. Charities can increase the number of people who donate because of the wide reach of social media. It works great as a vessel to inform people about different charities and to get help to those who need it. Different social media platforms have made it easier for individuals to raise money for charities as well. In the last few years, there has been an uptick in people using Facebook to request donations to a specific charity for their birthday in lieu of traditional gifts. Using a communication channel like social media to reach out for those in need can gain extra attention, leading to more people receiving help and more money going to important causes.

Some people may overlook the good that social media produces. While some people may use social media in a mean-spirited way, many can use it to spread kindness and to improve the world. Keep this in mind as you use social media so that you can be a person who uses it to help.
