Questions Your Child May Have Before Getting Braces

If your child is getting braces, they have some changes coming their way that they might have questions about. It is a good idea to be prepared with some possible answers before they have their braces placed. The more you know about the process, the easier it will be for you to help your child with any questions they may have along the way.

What Can They Eat?

One of the biggest questions that kids will probably have about their braces is what they are going to be able to eat. This can vary a little depending on the kind of braces your child gets, but the rules are generally the same. Usually, your child won’t be able to eat any foods that are overly sticky or chewy. They will also need to avoid things like corn on the cob which can be hard on braces. It is important that you help your child to recognize all the foods they can eat and to make sure they have access to the things they need and like to eat that are on the approved list.

How Long Will They Have to Wear Them?

Your kids may also be curious about how long they will need to wear their braces once they have them. This can vary depending on your child’s teeth and how willing they are to follow the restrictions they may have. Treatment time for braces can last up to two years. But depending on your child’s teeth it may take less time than that. The more careful your child is with following their diet and taking care of their teeth along the way, the quicker the process will be.

What Will It Feel Like

It is hard to explain the specifics of how braces feel to your child, but they will likely want to know. It can be helpful for them to understand that most of the discomfort that braces can be is very temporary and only lasts for a day or two after the braces are placed. In general, there might be some pressure and even a little pain for the first couple of days and after any adjustments, but otherwise, their braces should be comfortable.

If your child is going to get braces, they are bound to be a little curious about what they should expect. The more you understand what braces will be like, the easier it will be for you to answer your child’s questions. If you don’t know the answer to something they ask, you can always look it up together or ask their orthodontist.
