Signs That You’re Eating Too Much Acidic Food

You know that food is one of the basic human needs. You’re also probably aware that the food you consume has a huge impact on your health. Too much or too little of any one food or type of food can be problematic, which is why such emphasis is placed on a balanced diet. Of course, if too much of that food is acidic, there are some signs you might start to notice.

Teeth Sensitivity

How do you feel when you bite into a deliciously cold ice cream cone? Does it hurt your teeth? Sensitive teeth can be a result of the protective layer of enamel that covers your teeth wearing away. Acid from the foods you eat is one thing that can compromise your enamel’s strength. According to 123Dentist, while you can remineralize your enamel, there isn’t a way to get it back once it’s gone. Not yet, anyway. Be sure to talk to a dentist promptly if you notice ongoing tooth sensitivity.

Digestive Problems

Have you noticed an increase in your discomfort after eating certain foods? If you’re experiencing acid reflux, your diet may be one of the culprits. According to Granite Peaks Gastroenterology, heartburn is commonly caused by eating acidic foods. Acidic foods may increase the level of acidity in the stomach. When the lower esophageal sphincter is unable to close properly, that acid can make its way back up into the esophagus, resulting in heartburn.

Inflammation caused by an overconsumption of acidic food isn’t something you’re going to notice right away, but will instead be a thing that happens over time. A highly acidic diet makes it more difficult for your body to neutralize the acids, putting greater strain on your systems. According to Kempsville Chiropractic, refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, and refined foods can be highly acidic and cause inflammation in the body. As a result, it’s best to limit these foods or avoid them as much as possible.

In many cases, a healthy diet is more a matter of what you eat than how much. If you eat too much acidic food, you could find yourself suffering from teeth sensitivity, digestive problems, and inflammation. Not sure if your diet is the cause of your troubles? Try keeping a log of what you eat and how much. Consult with your doctor to see if they think that you might benefit from making some dietary changes.
