What to Do When You Have Lots of Clothes and Little Space

You’ve accumulated quite the collection of clothing over the years. You may not even realize how much you have until your closet and drawers are bulging and can no longer contain their contents. If you have a lot of clothing and relatively little space, you may find yourself wondering what your best options are.

Decide What You Really Need

Do you really need all of the clothes you have? Chances are the answer is a resounding no. Figure out what you really need and consider getting rid of the rest. If you aren’t sure, identify what pieces you use the most. For hanging clothes, try hanging the hangers backwards and then turning the hanger around when you use it. After a set period of time, get rid of anything you haven’t turned over. Donating used clothes is one option, as is trying to sell them.

Put Some Into Storage

If you still have more clothes than you have space for, put some of them into storage. If you live anywhere with distinct seasons, you could divide your wardrobe into warm weather clothing and cold weather clothing. Whatever isn’t in season goes into storage. Be careful what you choose to store your clothing in. Plastic containers might not be the best for storing clothes because they can make mold more likely. If they are breathable and have a lid, however, they can be a good option. You can always line them with sheets and throw some silica packets in to help with any moisture content.

Use Space-Saving Tactics

Space-saving tactics are essential for making the most of what little space you may have. Take advantage of vertical door space by using over-the-door hangers. This can be a great way to hang shoes, scarves, bags, or whatever else you want. Use space-saving folding techniques to keep your clothes folded neatly while conserving space. Adding another tension rod to your closet can potentially double the amount of storage space you have for hanging clothes as well.

Having a lot of clothing can be wonderful, but it can also be incredibly frustrating if you don’t have enough space for it. Try figuring out what you really need, putting some of it into storage, and using space-saving tactics. That will help you make the most of the space you have and make sure that you have the items that you need most when you need them.
