Winter is Coming—Are You Ready?

With winter just around the corner, it's definitely time to start considering how you're going to prep. The winter months can be some of the coziest months of the year if you're prepared for them when they come. Here are some tips on how to make a cold and snowy winter great.

Dress Appropriately

If you live in an area prone to ice and below-freezing temperatures, you have to bundle up. Safety means more than style when it comes to dressing for the winter. It's important to wear proper shoes, bundle up with a warm coat and protect your hands from the cold air. Jeans and slacks are fine but wear leggings, long johns, or sweats beneath them, and never underestimate the power of layers. Wear a comfortable shirt that won't be too hot to wear indoors. Layer other garments, like a sweater, sweatshirt, and a large coat, on top of it. Wear thick socks and boots, and don't forget a scarf, gloves, and something to keep your head warm. Beanies, knit hats, and woolen caps are all great choices.

Drive Cautiously

Slick and icy roads can be incredibly dangerous, especially if you're not used to driving on them. However, there are some things you can do to minimize your risk of injury in inclement weather. First of all, if you can stay home, stay home. There is no reason to risk your safety or the safety of others by going out when you don't have to go out. Also, drive slowly, and never brake suddenly. Finally, always wear your seatbelt just in case you get into an accident.

Be Prepared

You should always stock up on things you might need in an emergency. Don't wait until the weather forecast says a storm is coming; there are certain items you should always keep on hand in the winter months. Some of these include bottled water, flashlights, candles, non-perishable food items, batteries, matches, a portable radio, portable cell-phone chargers and extra medicines and toiletries. Being prepared means staying safe.

Don't let the winter months scare you. Simply prepare for them, buy some warm winter clothes, and don't forget to enjoy yourself. Grab your warmest, fluffiest blanket, pick out a great book to read, build a fire in the hearth if you have one, and fix yourself some hot chocolate. Settle in and get ready for an amazing winter.
