Natural Alternatives to Over-the-Counter Pain Medication

Although experiencing pain can be extremely uncomfortable, many people prefer pain to over-the-counter pain medication. Over-the-counter pain medication can be addictive, dangerous, harmful to your body, and even potentially have negative side-effects. If you are interested in natural forms of pain relief, here are a few things you can try.

Turmeric

Many of you are familiar with the bright yellow spice, turmeric. Although it’s commonly used in household cooking, it also has been shown to contain powerful medicinal qualities. For thousands of years, it has been used in India as a medicinal herb and a natural anti-inflammatory. Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin, which gives it its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

However, the amount of curcumin in turmeric is small enough that it is difficult to receive its health benefits just from its use in your food. The easiest ways to take turmeric is through a daily capsule that can be found at your local health foods store. Your doctor should be able to advise you on the correct dosage.

CBD Oil

The reputation of CBD oil has suffered some due to its close association with marijuana. However, CBD and marijuana are two very different products. So, what is CBD? CBD is short for cannabidiol, a compound naturally found in the cannabis plant. Although marijuana also comes from the cannabis plant, it is not made or ingested the same way as CBD. CBD is legal in many states and is non-addictive. It is usually taken in the form of an oil or gummies, and has been used for many years as a natural anti-inflammatory and pain relief.

Many people like CBD because it only has very rare, minimal side effects. These side effects include changes in appetite, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, and nausea are some common side effects of CBD. Again, these side effects are rare. However, you should still be aware of the side effects that CBD can cause, and consult a doctor whenever necessary.

Cold Compresses

Cold compresses have also been shown to be effective forms of temporary pain relief. A cold compress works through constricting the blood vessels around your affected area, thereby reducing inflammation and numbing the area to pain. Cold compresses, while effective temporarily, should not be used as a permanent cure or substitute for a severe problem.

Turmeric, CBD oil, and cold compresses have all shown to be effective natural alternatives to over-the-counter pain medication. While using these options, however, it is important to remember to consult a doctor when necessary, and only use these natural alternatives as supplementary treatments to your doctor’s orders.
